The Central Drakensberg can be reached via Winterton, Estcourt and Mooi River. The Central Drakensberg is the main tourism hub of the Drakensberg Region. it’s an area of scenic grandeur.
The Areas included in the Central Drakensberg are Cathedral Peak, Monks Cowl, Champagne Valley, Injisuthi, Giants Castle and Kamberg.
Giant’s Castle and Kamberg boast some of the areas most impressive displays of San Rock Art that are easily accessible for tourists. And the easy hiking trails to get there are simply spectacular.
The Champagne Castle Region with its fresh mountain air, numerous holiday resorts and beautifully tended golf courses is a popular weekend getaway for visitors from both Gauteng and Durban. The world renowned Drakensberg Boy’s Choir has its home here in the Champagne valley.

Top tip here is to book the luxury cave, an accommodation unit that is built under a rock with a glassed in front, a wooden deck with hammock chairs. Food served is also a treat and you could even opt for private dining on the deck of your cave.
- Ardmore Guest Farm – Lovely farm situated in the Champagne Valley. Thatched chalets with views of Champagne Castle.
- Witsend – Self Catering chalets in the Champagne Valley just opposite the Drakensberg Boys Choir School. Great little wedding venue too.
